Pupil Leadership
The term pupil leadership refers to education principles and practices that reflect the importance of providing children with the opportunities and support to play a role in making the decisions that affect them. The principles of effective pupil leadership include:
- Recognising that pupils have logical perspectives and opinions on issues that matter in the classroom, in the school, and in the community.
- Giving pupils an active role in influencing decisions about these issues as well as in the implementation of these decisions.
- Enabling pupils to participate as active young citizens.

We have a very active school council, who play an important role in the school. One school council representative is elected by vote from each KS2 class. These pupils attend regular meetings to identify fundraising opportunities and discuss and suggest ways of improving the school.
This allows children to have a valued and respected voice in the school. They have made important decisions such as choosing rewards for good behaviour, improving the outdoor classroom and helping achieve our Healthy Schools Award. They were also key in devising the Longford Code.
The Eco-council is made up of representatives from each year group in the school. We aim to make Longford Academy a school with children who appreciate the natural world and act responsibly towards the environment.
Each September, we elect a new team and come up with an agenda for the academic year ahead. Our Eco Council meets at least once a month to discuss ways to reduce, recycle, and protect our environment. They work to achieve our eco action plan and raise awareness of green issues within the school.
